The Altoona Alliance Church of the Christian & Missionary Alliance was founded in 1891, just four years after the founding of the national movement. It became the second organized C. & M.A. in the State of Pennsylvania, the first being in Pittsburgh. Dr. F.H. Senft founded the Altoona church in January 1892 as a result of a Missionary Conference he held in the city in August 1891.
The church family worshiped around the city in several locations from 1891 until a new building was constructed in 1929 at the corner of 16th Avenue and 11th Street. In 1983 a new facility was built at 17th Street and McMahon Road. On May 6, 2007 a tragic fire burned that building to the ground. The church building was destroyed but the church family continued to thrive. Through the ensuing months following the fire the congregation held services at Roosevelt Jr. High and Pleasant Valley Elementary. On July 8 the church family moved into their temporary facility at 1314 12th Street in the former 1st Presbyterian Church in downtown Altoona.
The Christian and Missionary Alliance is a denomination with world wide missionary vision, now numbering more than 1800 churches in the United States and over 1200 missionaries serving in more than 50 countries.
